THE EARLY YEARS
The Transition from Sponge to Sense of Self:
From Theta Brain Waves, to Alpha and Beta Waves
When children are in the theta brainwave state (which dominates from birth until around age 6-7), they aren’t operating with strong logical reasoning. Instead, their brains are in a highly suggestible, imaginative, and unconscious mind-driven mode – almost like being in a light trance or dream state.
This means:
- They absorb everything without questioning it – which is why early experiences shape core beliefs so deeply.
- Their thinking is magical, symbolic, and imaginative rather than rational.
- They learn best through play stories and experiences rather than explanations or logic.
Once they start transitioning to more alpha and beta brainwaves (around 7+), they become more analytical, questioning, and independent in their thinking – hence, the little “rebellious” phase.
Around age 7-8, they start forming “I AM” statements, suddenly defining who they are, based on everything we have taught them – whether through our words, actions, or what they picked up along the way. The foundations are set, and their sense of self begins to take shape. Since early conditioning becomes the foundation of the self-beliefs, our words, actions, and energy have a profound impact on how they see themselves and the world.
What Does This Mean For Us as Role Models?
- Speak positively and encouragingly, as children internalize labels and messages.
- Lead by example – they learn more from what we do than what we say.
- Foster imagination and play, as these are natural ways they learn and grow.
- Create a safe, loving environment, so their unconscious beliefs are built on security and confidence rather than fear.
Essentially, we are programming their foundational mindset – so let’s make it one that empowers them!
